PREMIERE: Dérive – “First Friday”

PREMIERE: Dérive – “First Friday”

Fearlessly creative, doggedly inventive, Western Massachusetts post-hardcore collective Dérive make challenging music that is defined by its joyful sense of expansiveness — even when the band’s music is at its most caustic and barbed. You can hear that subtle, wholly unique balance — a sense of play and a sense of ferocity — on “First Friday”, the first single from the band’s forthcoming EP Full Body Awareness which will be released on cassette June 10th. The song, a brief but dense 2-and-a-half minutes recalls some radiant blend of Milemarker (those subtle studio choices), These Arms Are Snakes (that muscular stomp), and Refused (lovely open verses as beds for singer Greg Nahabedian’s screams) — in other words, punk music with an impressionist touch. Stream “First Friday” below, and preorder Full Body Awareness here and check out the band’s upcoming tour dates here.
